Maine Wilderness River & Ocean Challenge Program

What to Bring list
(and What Not to Bring)

Bring:

A happy, enthusiastic, high Spirit and a hope for adventure.

Sleeping bag- synthetic, not goose-down. Doesn’t need to be high quality, the weather will probably be warm.

Sleeping pad- worth their weight in gold (at least for old folks like Uncle Greg and Uncle Jim). The best are the “self-inflating”. You can buy them at Wal-Mart or sporting good stores. (approx. $40)

Good quality rain jacket- only if you already own one. We bought L.L. Bean rain jackets last year for you to borrow. This will be your precious “house” when the weather goes south. Make sure you're prepared for occasional "cold" as it can get cold at night or after a storm, if you get wet, etc. even though it is summer.

Two changes of clothes i.e. pants, shirts, socks, etc. You’ll spend most of the time in swimming suit (having a blast in the water). Nylon zip-off pants are best. No blue jeans (they’re useless when wet). All your stuff must fit in a small drybag, (provided.)

One good hat, one pair of sneakers or water shoes. Swim suit,

Sunglasses, polarized is best for cutting glare while fishing. (The main purpose of life is to fish) (just kidding, but not by much).

Sunscreen, if needed. One flashlight and extra batteries.(crank ups are good) Some wool sock are worth their weight in gold.

Bug dope, (containing Deet is best but not more then 25% for children).

One fleece or wool jacket, not cotton sweatshirt, it’s useless when wet.

Do not bring:

A complaining, lazy attitude

No electrical devices, except a camera. Any found will be thrown into the river or the ocean, which ever is closer.

Don’t bring any unnecessary items. This is a nature experience. You won’t need city stuff,(make-up, cell phones, deodorant, ipods, jewelry, razors, etc. (toothpaste and toothbrush are welcome)

NO,NO,NO, flip flops.( last year a girl said that was a stupid rule, then she cut her foot, and tried to hide it from Uncle Greg) (you can’t hide anything from Uncle Greg, he sees all).

No knifes unless you are Boy or Girl Scout certified. Last year we had a serious cut. The girl had to be evacuated out to a hospital.
